New Offerings in Middle Eastern Languages

Are you interested in the Middle East? Are you looking for a new challenge?

Opportunities to study the languages of the Middle East expand in Spring 2009 when the Department of Modern Literatures and Cultures launches its new Self-Directed Language Acquisition Program in Modern Hebrew, Persian/Farsi, and Turkish. Participants in the program will not only explore their chosen language through print and electronic resources but also meet regularly with a language partner to practice the spoken language. They will learn to set and fulfill their own language-learning goals while exploring the cultures in which these languages are spoken. The first semester’s enrollment is 1.5 units listed as MLC 105 and 110.

Everyone interested in this new program is invited to an information session on Thursday, November 13, from 4:30 – 5:30 in Puryear Hall 110. More information is also available at http://globalstudio.wordpress.com/sdlap/ or by contacting sscinica@richmond.edu

I think Harvard has just hired him (JFK School of something) ... and I have a budget of $0.00. kim :-) Can you Skype a speaker? that might be nifty?
Mike Spear Comment by Mike Spear on August 15, 2008 at 5:32pm
That's a difficult question to answer. Much depends on where the speakers live, how busy they are and whether they want to enlighten our students. Do you have money to offer? That helps.
Also, have you considered using Skype? It has worked well for us recently,

Okay, Mike ... so what's the process for inviting a speaker?
Mike Spear Comment by Mike Spear on August 10, 2008 at 9:37pm
I can't imagine a more knowledgeable speaker about that part of the world. Let's go for it.

I'm trying to get a link to an interview up there and another link to his books, but I'm quite the novice at this. Thanks for being patient!

Welcome Mike & Carly - what do yo think of trying to get Rory Stewart to come to UR and speak? Perhaps we could get a group to read "The Places in Between" or "Prince of the Marshes".
